The story of the Dinosaur Game begins with the Chrome design team at Google in 2014. Chrome’s UX (User Experience) team, led by Sebastien Gabriel, wanted to make the “No Internet Connection” page more entertaining. Instead of displaying just an error message, they envisioned a fun distraction for users while waiting for their internet to return.
The idea was simple: what if your browser gave you a small game to pass the time during outages? Inspired by the prehistoric age before Wi-Fi — a “time with no internet” — the team designed a pixel-art Tyrannosaurus rex, representing users thrown back to the digital Stone Age.
The result was a charming endless runner that appears when you’re offline. Just press the spacebar (or tap on mobile), and the T-Rex starts running through a monochrome desert, jumping over cacti and dodging flying pterodactyls.
